Ninshubur stands, speaks:
I am Ninshubur the constant support of Inanna
Her sukkal who gives her wise advice,
her warrior who fights by her side.
She is my heroine and
I am her worshipper and adorer.
Her holiness is within me and my being descends from her.
My uttermost beauty is hidden by mankindÕs blindness with which afflicts me as well.
I incubate amidst starfire in the dread and the dead
I lie hidden in the sleepy dark of the Womb of Earth
Preparing to go forth unto the infinite night then again to go forth by day.
Thus I follow, striving to live as and in her.
From the summits of heaven Inanna looked into the pit,
Ninshubur + all women present: She was a Goddess on the summits of heaven, but her heart was in hell,
Ninshubur + all present: O Inanna, upon the summits, your heart in hell!
Ninshubur:
From the Great Above, she opened her ear to the Great Below.
Ninshubur + all women present: From the Great Above, the Goddess opened her holy ear to the Great Below.
Ninshubur + all present: From the Great Above, Inanna opened her ear to the Great Below.
Ninshubur:
My lady abandoned heaven and earth to descend to the underworld.
Ninshubur + all women present: Inanna abandoned heaven and earth to descend to the kur.
Ninshubur + all present: She abandoned her office of holy priestess to descend to the Dark City.
Ninshubur:
In Uruk she abandoned her temple to descend to the underworld.
In Bad-tibira she abandoned her temple to descend to the kur.
In Zab-alam she abandoned her temple to descend to the Dark City.
In Adab she abandoned her temple to descend to the underworld.
In Nippur she abandoned her temple to descend to the kur.
In Kish she abandoned her temple to descend to the Dark City.
In Akkad she abandoned her temple to descend to the underworld.
Ninshubur: She gathered together the seven me (may)
Ninshubur + all women present: She took them into her hands.
Ninshubur + all present: She prepared herself, with the may in her possession.
I am Inanna, Queen Of Heaven, who comes down from the point of the dawn. I went to the Abzu, the whole temple and sought the me (may) from My Holy Father Enki. I offered him beer in plenty and drank with him till he was drunk with beer and asked for the me (may) and they were given to me:
the high priesthood, the godship
the throne of kingship and crook of shepherdship
the art of war-making
the art of the hero
the art of treachery
the plundering of cities
the art of lovemaking
the art of kissing of the phallus
the art of joyfully coupling with strangers
the arts of power
forthright and slanderous speech
the art of music
the art of all crafts
the art of travel
the art of home-making in the secure dwelling place
He gave me the giving of judgements and making of decisions
He gave me my standards, cosmetics and vestments of office
Ninshubur speaks:
She wrapped the royal robe, the Pala, around her body. (Yechidah Ð and thinks about the chaotic existence of being with all possibilities equally available and imminent)
She slipped the gold ring onto her wrist (Chiah Ð and thinks about the energy of the Sun falling upon the Earth, making wind to blow, waves to form on the sea, volcanos to erupt, continents to move, plants to grow, animals to revel in running and jumping)
Bound the girdle of birthstones around her waist. (Chiah Ð thinks about sexual energy pulsing from parents to her to children and thereon)
She placed the shugurra, the crown of the steppe upon her head (Neschemah Ð and thinks about invention, intuition, creation)
She took the lapis measuring rod and line in her hand. (Ruach Ð and thinks about measuring, analyzing and physically sorting objects)
She tied the small lapis beads around her neck
Bound the breastplate called ÒCome man, come!Ó around her chest.
She daubed her eyes with ointment called ÒLet him come. Let him come.Ó
She arranged the locks of hair upon her head. (Nephesh Ð and thinks sensuously of food, perfume, drunkenness and sexual ecstasy Ð she is filled with energy to the point of frenzy)
Inanna set out for the underworld and I, Ninshubur, her faithful servant, went with her.
(Ereshkigal meditates these same energies, finally blending them together into a chaos so fiercely active that it appears as static, clear void)
Inanna walks deosil to Nishubur, stops, speaks:
Ninshubur, my constant support,
My sukkal who gives me wise advice, my warrior who fights by my side.
I am descending to the kur, to the underworld.
If I do not return, set up a lament for me by the ruins
Beat the drum for me in the assembly places. Circle the houses of the gods.
Tear at your eyes, at your mouth, at your thighs.
Dress yourself in a single garment like a beggar.
Go to Nippur, to the temple of Enlil.
When you enter his holy shrine, cry out:
O Father Enlil, do not let your daughter be put to death in the underworld.
Do not let your bright silver be covered with the dust of the kur.
Do not let your precious lapis be broken into stone for the stoneworker.
Do not let your fragrant boxwood be cut into wood for the woodworker.
Do not let the holy priestess of heaven be put to death in the underworld.
If Enlil will not help you go to Ur, to the temple of Nanna and weep before Father Nanna.
If Nanna will not help you, go to Eridu to the temple of Enki and weep before Father Enki.
Father Enki, the God of Wisdom, knows the secrets of the Food and Water of Life. Surely, he will not let me die!
Ninshubur remains in place while
Inanna walks deosil back to her place, speaks:
Go now, Ninshubur Ð do not forget my commands to you.
Ninshubur sits down in place and pore breaths the Element of Earth (cold, dry and heavy)
Inanna continues around the circle deosil to Neti; stops to his right, claps 7 times and speaks fiercely:
Open the door, gatekeeper! Open the door Neti! I would enter, I come alone!
Neti speaks:
I am Neti, the Gatekeeper
I guard the Halls of Refreshment and Repose
I am the keeper of the Great Secret
Beware ye who approach my post recklessly
Once ye enter there is no quick return but a due term to be servedÉWho are you?
Inanna speaks: I am Inanna, Queen Of Heaven, come down from the point of the dawn.
Neti speaks: If you are truly this Inanna, Queen of Heaven, come down from point of the dawn, why have you come to the Land Of No Return? What makes you take the road from which no traveler goes back?
Inanna speaks: Because of my older sister, Ereshkigal. Her husband, Guga-lanna, the Bull Of Heaven, has died. I have come to witness the funeral rites. Let the beer of his funeral rites be poured into the cup. This is true.
Neti speaks: Stay here Inanna, I will speak to my queen.
Neti walks quickly, circling widdershins 7 times, then moving from the West to the throne, kneels
Ereshkigal speaks:
ÒI am Erseshkigal and my beauty is hidden by mankindÕs blindness
I am the eater of stars and I incubate their fire in the dark and the dead
All lie hidden and silent with Me in My Womb of sleepy Earth
Being prepared to go forth by day again, then again unto infinity.Ó
Neti speaks:
My queen, a maid as tall as heaven, as wide as the earth,
As strong as the foundations of the city wall waits outside the palace Gate.
She has gathered together the seven may. She has taken them into her hands.
With the may in her possession, she has prepared herself: the shugurra crown, lapis beads, the breastplate called ÒCome man, come,Ó the girdle of birthstones, golden ring, the lapis measuring rod and line and the royal robe, the Pala.
Ereshkigal fidgets; then speaks:
Come Neti, chief gatekeeper of the kur, heed my words.
Bolt the seven gates of the underworld. Then, let Inanna enter, but as she enters each gate, enforce its particular Law and remove one of the may.
Let the holy priestess of heaven enter my Dark City bowed low and naked.
Neti walks quickly, circling deosil 7 times; each time he passes the West he claps; finally stops at his post; gives the sign of Rending the Veil, speaks:
Come Inanna, enter.
Inanna enters, stops; transfers desire for material possession to necklace and surrenders this as itÕs removed. Congregation follows the same mental action here and with each object. Neti removes necklace of lapis beads, places it in a large basket.
Inanna speaks: Why do you do this?
Neti speaks: Quiet Inanna! The ways of the underworld are perfect; they may not be questioned!
Inanna circles widdershins. Neti gestures the audience to follow her; after they pass, he gives sign of Closing the Veil; she stops in front of Neti and claps 6 times.

Inanna speaks: Why do you do this?
Neti speaks: Quiet Inanna! The ways of the underworld are perfect; they may not be questioned!
Inanna lets loose all sense of being and remains as mentally blank as possible.
Neti raises InannaÕs
arms to Sign of Osiris Slain, guides her to stand in front of Ereshkigal, then
he brings basket and places it before Ereshkigal. Neti guides audience to stand fanned out behind her,
then he stands at side of throne.
Ereshkigal rises and speaks: The Anunna, the judges of the underworld, pass judgement on Inanna. I, Ereshkigal fasten the eye of death on Inanna. I speak against her the Word of Wrath. I utter against her the cry of guilt. Inanna is turned into a corpse, a piece of rotting meat, and is hung from a hook on the wall.
Ereshkigal blesses Neti who becomes Anunna.
Ereshkigal absorbs all the energies in the basket, on top of her own energies, then gives Sign of Isis Mourning, next, Anunna give Sign of the Apophis, then Anunna, takes Inanna and places her on meat hook, at back of throne
After a minute, Ereshkigal feels full to bursting with the extra energy and writhes in pain as a result.
Ninshubur rises and speaks: After three days and nights, I, Ninshubur, the loyal minister and angel of eloquence who tells the truth, raised a shout thru heaven for InannaÕs sake, a howl in the halls of the Gods; beat a drum in the holy shrine for her sake, scratched my eyes and lacerated my mouth, put on a single garment like a beggar. Then all alone went to the Bright House of The Mountain, to EnlilÕs home in Nippur. But Enlil would not listen so I went to Ur in Ekish-nugal to NannaÕs temple, weeping,
but Nanna would not listen, so I went to Eridu.
Ninshubur walks deosil once, stops in South, bows and continues around around the circle, stops and kneels before Enki.
Enki speaks:
I am Father Enki
I am the flame that burns in the heart of every living being and the core of every star.
I am Life and the giver of Life,
Seeds quicken and sprout in the soil and the flesh at my caress. Then are blasted. But, their seeds sprout in turn.
I am the source of the River of Life-force that flows into the flesh world and back out.
Ninshubur speaks:
O Father Enki, do not let your daughter be put to death in the underworld.
Do not let your bright silver be covered with the dust of the kur.
Do not let your precious lapis be broken into stone for the stoneworker.
Do not let your fragrant boxwood be cut into wood for the woodworker.
Do not let the holy priestess of heaven be put to death in the underworld.Ó
Enki speaks: What has happened? What has my daughter done?
Inanna! Queen of All the lands! Holy Priestess of Heaven!
I am troubled. I am grieved.
Ninshubur speaks: From under his fingernails Father Enki brought forth dirt. He fashioned the dirt into a kur-garra and a ga-latur, creatures neither male nor female. He gave the food of life to kur-garra and the water of life to the ga-latur.
Kur-garra speaks: I will go to the underworld, the kur, entering the door like a swarm of flies.
Ereskgigal, the Queen of the Underworld is in labour with her children.
No linen is spread over her body. Her holy breasts are naked as a pitcher. A thing of copper lies beside her. Her hair swirls about her head like leeks.
When she cries out, I will repeat whatever she says. The queen will be pleased.
She will offer water from her river and grain from the fields of the dead.
I will not take the water of death or that seed but will say
to her:
ÓGive me the corpse that hangs on a spike.Ó Over the corpse
I will scatter the food and water of life. Inanna will rise.
Kurgarra circles widdershins, passing thru the Gate 7 times, acting sneaky, and moving from the West comes to stand before Ereshkigal.
Ereshkigal speaks: My belly, O my belly!
Kurgarra speaks: Our queen moans, my belly, O my belly!
Ereshkigal speaks: My back, O my back!
Kurgarra speaks: Our Queen moans, my back, O my back!
Ereshkigal speaks: My heart, O my heart!
Kurgarra speaks: Our Queen moans, my heart, O my heart!
Ereshkigal speaks: My head, O my head!
Kurgarra speaks: Our Queen moans, my head, O my head!
Ereshkigal speaks: My presence, O my presence!
Kurgarra speaks: Our Queen moans, my presence, O my presence!
Ereshkigal speaks: Who speaks to me? Who moans, groans and sighs with me, calling to my entrails from theirs?
If you are Gods, I bless you. If you are mortals I will give you a gift. I will give you the water-gift from my river in its fullness.
Kurgarra speak: We do not wish it.
Ereshkigal speaks: Then I will give you the grain-gift from my fields in harvest.
Kurgarra speaks: We do not wish it.
Ereshkigal speaks: Speak then! What do you wish?
Kurgarra speaks: We wish only the corpse that hangs from the hook on the wall.
Ereshkigal speaks: The corpse belongs to Inanna!
Kurgarra speaks: Whether it belongs to our Queen or our King, this is what we wish.
Ereshkigal speaks: Let it be so.
Kurgarra retrieves the basket and places it by Ereshkigal. He places one hand on the top of her head and one over the basket and draws the excess energy out of Ereshkigal and projects it into the objects in the basket. He then brings the basket to the Gate Of Hell. Finally, slowly dances erotically around Inanna, circling 7 times deosil projecting sexual energy into Inanna. She receives this as the impulse to transit and extend life force.
Inanna comes to life; gives Sign of Osiris Risen.
Ereshkigal returns to her throne and sits, giving sign of Osiris Risen as well.
Anunna speak: No one ascends from the underworld, the kur, unmarked. To escape, Inanna must provide someone in her place.
Ereshkigal blesses Anunna, who become the galla
Inanna begins circling deosil. Each time she passes through the Gate recovering one article of clothing and with it the aspects of personality sheÕd transferred to them. The Congregation also reclaims those aspects of themselves.
Inanna comes to the East, stops.
The galla starts slowly circling deosil, stealthily, 7 times, stopping in the North.
Inanna speaks, right after sheÕs stopped:
I am Inanna, the light of the bright stars of the vault of indigo sky enthroned in warm, exultant flesh.
I hold the flame that burns in the heart of every living being and the core of every star.
I am Life and a giver of Life, but I know that incarnation is a visit with both beginning and end.
We must remember that incarnation is undertaken for pure joy and adventure; sorrows are sharp, thrilling spices.
This life is to be savored in its sweet and the sour aspects.
All passes and is done, but there is that which remains.
Seeds quicken and sprout in the soil and the flesh of my caress. Then are blasted. But, their seeds sprout in turn.
I am the source and vessel of the River of Life-force that flows into the world of flesh and back out.
I am the entrance to the Gate Of Life and the enterer.
My pleasure is to come and go and go and come as it pleases me, world without end -- or reason. Aumgn.
Ninshubur speaks: As Inanna ascended from the underworld the galla, the demons of the kur followed.
They are meager like reeds, thin as pikestaves.
There is a thing with a scepter but he is no minister.
There walks another thing with a mace on his hip but this is no fighting man.
The creatures that seek to hug her are things that neither eat nor drink.
They are not appeased with offerings of flour, or libations of holy water.
They accept no gifts.
They enjoy no lovemaking. They have no sweet children to kiss.
They snatch a wife from her husbandÕs loins, and a child from the nurseÕs nipple.
The Galla approach Inanna, stop at her side whisper in her ear: Go in peace Inanna, we will take Ninshubur in your place.
Inanna speaks: No! Ninshubur, is my constant support,
My sukkal who gives me wise advice, my warrior who fights by my side.
When I had descended to the kur, to the underworld.
She set up a lament for me by the ruins
She beat the drum for me in the assembly places. She circled the houses of the gods.
She tore at her eyes, at her mouth, at her thighs.
She dressed herself in a single garment like a beggar.
She set out for Nippur, to the temple of Enlil and begged him to restore my life.
She went to Ur and the temple of Nanna and begged him to restore my life.
She went to Eridu and the temple of Enki and begged him to restore my life.
Because of her, my life was saved. I will never give Ninshubur to you!
Ereshkigal speaks:
No one ascends from the underworld, the kur, unmarked. To escape, Inanna must provide someone in her place.
Inanna: We bow to the law of my beloved sister. But we put this sacrafice off for today.
We feast and laugh and dance in the warm sun and revel in the pleasure our Earthly bodies and in Earthly life.
All the Celebrants surround the altar; Ereshkigal stands behind Inanna with her arms on her back.
They all breath in and out in unison and on 3rd out-breath they all project their INVOKED energies into a single WHITE SPHERE, then hold that visualizaton for another 3 breaths and on the 3rd out-breath visualize the SPHERE being aborbed into the sacraments, breaking down into the Element appropriate to each. All take 2 steps straight back except for Inanna and Ninshubur
Inanna moves to the SOUTH, offers Lamp to Ninshubur
Inanna moves to the West and offers wine to Ninshubur
Inanna moves to the North and offers bread to Ninshubur
Inanna moves to the EAST and offers a rose to Ninshubur
Then Inanna departs with a rose
Ninshubur moves to South and offers Lamp to Enki and repeats cycle
Enki offers sacraments to Neti
Neti offers sacraments to Ereshkigal
Erishkigal offers sacraments to first member of Congregation
First member of congregation offers to second member and so on
